What You Need to Cut Applique Designs
Applique designs require special equipment and supplies to make them look their best. Before you begin, make sure you have the following items:
- Applique pattern
- Fusible webbing
- Fabric for the applique design
- Sharp scissors
- Iron and pressing cloth
- Sewing machine and suitable thread
Applique Pattern
The applique pattern is the basis for the design you are creating. It is important to choose a pattern that will look good with the fabric you choose. If you are making a quilt, you may want to choose a pattern that will coordinate with the other blocks on the quilt. If you are making a wall hanging, you may want to choose a pattern that will fit the theme of the room where it will be displayed.
Fusible Webbing
Fusible webbing is an adhesive that is used to attach the applique fabric to the background fabric. It is applied to the back of the applique fabric and then ironed onto the background fabric. The fusible webbing helps to keep the applique fabric in place and makes it easier to sew the applique onto the background fabric.
Fabric for the Applique Design
Choose a fabric that is suitable for the applique design. The fabric should be of a similar weight to the background fabric and should be prewashed and ironed to remove any shrinkage. If you are using a patterned fabric, make sure the pattern is not too busy so that it will not interfere with the design. Choose a fabric that will provide a nice contrast to the background fabric.
Cutting the Applique Pieces
Once you have selected the fabric and the pattern, place the pattern on the wrong side of the fabric and pin it in place. It is important to use sharp scissors when cutting the fabric so that the edges are neat and clean. Cut the fabric close to the edges of the pattern. If you are using a patterned fabric, make sure to cut the fabric so that the pattern is facing in the right direction.
Ironing the Applique Pieces
Once the pieces are cut, the next step is to iron the fusible webbing onto the back of the applique pieces. Place a pressing cloth over the back of the fabric and then iron the fusible webbing onto the fabric. Make sure the fabric is completely covered with the webbing.
Attaching the Applique Pieces to the Background Fabric
Once the pieces are cut and the fusible webbing is applied, the next step is to attach the applique pieces to the background fabric. Place the applique pieces in the desired position on the background fabric and then press them in place with the iron. Once all the pieces are in place, you can sew them onto the background fabric.
Finishing the Applique Design
Sewing the applique pieces onto the background fabric is the final step in the process. Use a zigzag stitch around the edges of the applique pieces to secure them to the background fabric. If you are making a quilt, you can use the same thread that you used to piece the quilt top. If you are making a wall hanging, you can use a decorative thread to embellish the edges of the applique pieces.
Once the applique pieces are in place and secured, your applique design is complete. Applique designs can be used to add color, texture, and interest to a variety of projects. With a little bit of practice and the right supplies, you can create beautiful applique designs.
