How to Sew a Beaded Applique

Adding beaded appliques to clothing, accessories, and other items can add a unique touch and a bit of sparkle. Sewing a beaded applique is not as difficult as it may seem and with a few simple steps anyone can easily add a bit of pizzazz to their items. To sew a beaded applique you will need the following items: fabric glue, thread, needle, fabric scissors, and of course the beaded applique.

Step 1: Glue the Applique to the Fabric

The first step is to apply a thin layer of fabric glue to the back of the beaded applique. Make sure to cover the entire back so that the applique will adhere properly to the fabric. Once the glue has been applied, quickly place the applique onto the desired area of the fabric. Press down firmly to ensure the applique is securely attached to the fabric. Let the glue dry completely before continuing on to the next step.

Step 2: Thread the Needle and Begin Sewing

Once the glue is dry, thread the needle with a length of thread that is double the length of the beaded applique. Tie the two ends of the thread together in a knot to create one long continuous thread. Begin sewing around the outer edge of the applique by pushing the needle through the fabric and the back of the applique. Pull the thread tight, but be sure not to make it too tight or it will distort the shape of the applique. Continue this process all the way around the applique until you reach the starting point. Tie a knot in the thread and trim off any excess thread.

Step 3: Sew the Beads to the Applique

The last step is to sew the beads onto the applique. This can be done by pushing the needle through the hole of the bead and then through the applique. Push the needle through the fabric and back of the applique. Pull the thread tight and then sew the next bead in the same manner. Be sure to keep the beads in their proper pattern and spacing as instructed. When all of the beads have been sewn, tie a knot in the thread and trim off any excess thread.

Conclusion

Sewing a beaded applique onto fabric is a fun and easy way to add a bit of sparkle and pizzazz to any item. All that is needed is fabric glue, thread, needle, fabric scissors, and the beaded applique. By following the simple steps above you can easily sew a beaded applique onto any piece of fabric. So grab some supplies and get to crafting!
