How to Wax Embroidery Floss

Embroidery floss is the thread used to embroider fabric. It is usually composed of several strands of thread twisted together to create one strong and durable thread. Waxing the floss helps to keep it strong and tangle free as you work with it, making it easier to use. Here are the steps you should follow to wax your embroidery floss.

Gather the Supplies

To wax your embroidery floss, you will need beeswax, a wax pencil, and a piece of fabric to be used as a backing. You may also want to use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the waxed floss.

Cut the Floss

Begin by cutting a length of embroidery floss. You can use any length you need, but you should make sure that it is long enough for the project you are working on. Once the floss has been cut, you are ready to start waxing.

Apply the Beeswax

Take the wax pencil and rub it on the beeswax until it is coated. Once the wax pencil is coated, apply it to the embroidery floss. Apply the wax in a continuous motion, making sure to cover the entire length of the floss.

Press the Floss into the Wax

Take the fabric backing and press the waxed floss into it. This will help to ensure that the wax is evenly distributed along the length of the floss. Work the floss into the wax until it is firmly embedded.

Let the Wax Set

Once the floss is firmly embedded in the wax, let it sit for a few minutes. This will allow the wax to harden and set, which will help to keep it from coming off the floss or tangling as you work.

Remove the Floss

Once the wax has set, you can remove the floss from the wax. Gently pull the floss from the wax and use a pair of sharp scissors to cut it. Once it is cut, the waxed floss is ready to use in your embroidery project.

Store the Floss

Once you have finished waxing your floss, you should store it in an airtight container. This will help to keep the wax from coming off and the floss from becoming tangled. Be sure to label the container with the type of floss and the date that it was waxed, so that you can easily identify it in the future.

Waxing your embroidery floss is a great way to make it easier to use. By following the above steps, you can ensure that your floss is properly waxed and ready for use in your next embroidery project.
