Mosaic Records Going Out of Business

For over thirty years, Mosaic Records has been synonymous with quality jazz, blues, and world music. Founded in 1983 by Michael Cuscuna and Charlie Lourie, the label was at the forefront of the jazz revival in the 1980s and has since released nearly 200 albums by some of the most influential jazz artists in the world. Unfortunately, the label announced this week that it will be going out of business.

In a statement released on their website, Mosaic announced that the label had been facing financial difficulties over the past few years and that, after careful consideration, they had decided to close their doors. Cuscuna and Lourie said that they had “passionately devoted their lives to the label” and that they were “deeply saddened” by the decision. They thanked their fans and artists for their support over the past three decades.

Mosaic’s impressive catalog includes albums by jazz legends like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and more. The label was also home to some of the most exciting and innovative projects from newer artists like Vijay Iyer and Jason Moran. They were known for their meticulous attention to detail and their commitment to quality, reissuing classic albums on vinyl and CD with extensive liner notes and bonus material.

The news of Mosaic’s closure was met with sadness by fans and artists alike. Many took to social media to express their admiration for the label and to share their favorite albums, while others posted photos of their collections in tribute. The outpouring of love and support was a testament to the impact that Mosaic had on the jazz world.

The Legacy of Mosaic Records

Mosaic Records was one of the most important labels in the history of jazz. They were the first label to release complete recordings of Miles Davis’ “Birth of the Cool” and John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps”, two albums that are considered cornerstones of modern jazz. They also released dozens of albums by lesser-known but equally important artists, helping to expand the reach of jazz to new audiences.

The label was also known for its commitment to preserving and celebrating the history of jazz. They released a series of box sets dedicated to classic jazz labels like Blue Note and Prestige, as well as a series of “Rarities” collections featuring previously unreleased music from the vaults of legendary jazz labels. These releases were an invaluable resource for jazz fans and historians alike.

Mosaic Records’ Final Releases

Mosaic Records’ final releases will be a series of vinyl box sets dedicated to classic Blue Note albums. Each box set will feature three albums remastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. The box sets will also include extensive liner notes, rare photos, and exclusive interviews with the artists. The first box set is scheduled to be released in November and will feature albums by Art Blakey, Hank Mobley, and Andrew Hill.

The closure of Mosaic Records is a sad event for the jazz world, but their legacy will live on through their extensive catalog of music. The label was an essential part of the jazz revival of the 1980s and their releases will continue to be cherished by fans for years to come.
