Help Preschoolers Learn the Basics of Crafting with Wallet Crafts
Wallet crafts are an easy way to get your preschooler interested in crafting. With just a few materials, you can create a wallet that your child can carry around and proudly show off. Wallet crafts are also great for teaching your preschooler about colors, shapes, and basic sewing techniques. This simple project is perfect for a rainy day, a weekend activity, or a summer craft project.
Materials Needed for Wallet Crafts
Before you can get started with your wallet craft project, you will need to gather a few materials. You will need felt fabric in two colors, embroidery floss in coordinating colors, scissors, a ruler, and an embroidery needle. If you don’t have any of these items on hand, you can usually find them at your local craft store.
Creating a Wallet Craft
Once you have gathered the necessary materials, it’s time to get to work! Begin by cutting two rectangles out of the felt fabric. These rectangles should be the same size and shape, but one should be a different color than the other. Then, lay the two rectangles on top of one another so that the colors are facing in opposite directions.
Now, use the embroidery floss to stitch around the edges of the felt rectangles. You can use a simple running stitch or a more decorative stitch, depending on your preference. When you have finished stitching, you will have created the main part of the wallet.
Next, use the ruler to measure out a strip of felt fabric to serve as the wallet’s closure. The strip should be about two-thirds the length of the wallet and one-third the width. Fold the strip in half and stitch the long sides together to create a loop. Then, stitch the loop to the top edge of the wallet.
Finishing Touches
Your wallet is almost complete! You can embellish it further by adding felt shapes, such as stars or hearts, to the front of the wallet. You can also stitch the child’s initials onto the wallet with the embroidery floss. Finally, use the needle to make a few small holes along the edge of the wallet and thread a piece of ribbon through the holes to create a handle.
